Why is ABS often used for vacuum forming of medical device casings? We need to first understand the performance characteristics of ABS vacuum forming:
1. ABS is synthesized from three chemical monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. The individual characteristics of these three components make ABS have good comprehensive mechanical properties. Acrylonitrile gives ABS good chemical corrosion resistance and surface hardness, butadiene gives ABS toughness, and styrene gives it good processability and dyeing properties.
2. The characteristics of ABS mainly depend on the ratio of three monomers and the molecular structure in the two phases. This allows for great flexibility in the design of ABS vacuum formed products, resulting in hundreds of different qualities of ABS materials available in the market.
3. ABS material has strong processability, good appearance characteristics, low creep resistance, and excellent dimensional stability.
4. Various ABS materials are easy to accept commonly used secondary processing treatments, such as machining, bonding, fastening, electroplating, painting, and ultrasonic welding.
5. ABS has excellent impact resistance and does not rapidly decrease at low temperatures. So ABS vacuum forming has good mechanical strength, hardness, and certain wear resistance.
6. ABS has good cold resistance, oil resistance, water resistance, and chemical stability. Water, inorganic salts, alkalis, and acids have almost no effect on ABS. It will dissolve or form emulsions in ketones, aldehydes, esters, and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and is insoluble in most alcohols and hydrocarbon solvents. However, it will soften and swell when in long-term contact with hydrocarbons.
Overall, it is because ABS has certain rigidity, hardness, impact and chemical resistance, radiation resistance, and resistance to ethylene oxide disinfection. The shell of large medical devices has a relatively large body, so the materials used to make it need to have good processability. The working environment it is in is relatively special, so it needs to have impact resistance, chemical resistance, radiation resistance, and ethylene oxide disinfection resistance. It is used to carry heavy objects, so ABS thick plate vacuum forming has a certain degree of rigidity and hardness.
